Innovation and Development from Canadian Institute.

The C2MI has received $8million in additional funding from the Canadian government.

The C2MI are a research and development center working on designing and prototyping microelectronics. Based in Quebec, their work focuses on three main areas:
1.    Semiconductors
2.    Specialised Circuits & Systems
3.    Electronics Assembly

Utilising strong links between academic institutions and numerous electronic companies, the team create new innovations, prototypes and designs. Semtech, IBM and CMC Microsystems are just some of the names working with the C2MI. 

The money has been granted thanks to the Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) program which invests 30 million a year in Canadian innovation. The program creates links between research expertise and the business community to get innovations to the market faster.

Canadian Electronics Industry - Back on Top?

For a long time after the Blackberry bubble burst, it seemed Canada’s electronics industry was shrinking beyond repair. Back in the mid 2000s Blackberry was the future of smartphones, and with it carrying the future of the Canadian electronics market. The company was making $5 billion in quarterly revenue and it was widely assumed that smartphones just couldn’t get any better. Then Apple came along, swiftly followed by Samsung and the rest is history. Blackberry’s revenue dropped to $660 million in the final fiscal quarter of 2014-15 and with it the rest of the electronics market in Canada suffered. Exports fell 22% between 2007 and 2014. In the information and communications sector, things were even worse with exports dropping by a huge 40%.

But things appear to be looking up. Bolstered by the research happening at Canada’s universities, the industry is able to move on from communications and enter into medical equipment, precision instruments and scientific equipment. By focusing on these specialist areas and moving on from communications, the electronics industry is expected to grow by an extra $3 billion by 2030 – this is up from $12.3 billion in 2014. 

Although imports are still outpacing exports for electronic equipment, the future is finally looking up and things are moving in the right direction for the Canadian electronics market. The automobile and aerospace industries are looking to expand, which will only further the growth of electronics, and printable electronics are also gaining significant traction here. This is all excellent news and we hope the growth continues.

Top 20 Semiconductor Companies

The rankings for the top 20 semiconductor sales for Q1 2015 have been released. Intel and Samsung are in 1^st and 2^nd place respectively and not surprisingly! The other companies within the top 20 are also unsurprising with other big names such as Qualcomm, TI and Avago all entering the top 20.

What is interesting however is that the top 4 all have completely different business models:

• Intel – a pureplay IDM
• Samsung – Vertically integrated IC supplier
• TSMS – a pureplay Foundry
• Qualcomm – A fabless company

All of the top 20 have made a huge amount of money in the first quarter, especially TSMC with their sales from 1Q14 to 1Q15 increasing a gigantic 44%! Intel's sales have remained flat but they remain on top and ahead of Samsung by $2,296M.

 

The majority of the companies are US based with 7 of them hailing from North America. Of the rest 4 are in Japan, 3 in Taiwan, 3 in Europe, 2 in South Korea and 1 in Singapore. There is quite broad mixture of locations showing that not one country is dominating completely.

With all the mergers and acquisitions in the pipeline such as NXP & Freescale and Microchip & Micrel, and no doubt there will be many other M&As occurring which we have no clue about yet, this ranking is likely to change considerably in the future.

The Canadian Printable Electronics Industry Association have got over 50 members signed up just in time for the 2015 Symposium. The Canadian Printed Electronics is the single largest event of its kind in Canada. It is completely devoted to printable electronics and will be a great place to learn about the industry, plus developments and applications for the technology.

All points of the supply chain from developers to consumer product manufacturers will be there including Canadian companies and global companies. How can pizza help combat counterfeit components?

Each April the pizza restaurant Pizza Pizza holds a 'Slices for Device' campaign across Canada at over 400 locations. Customers are encouraged to trade in unwanted or outdated electronic devices in return for a free slice of pizza. So far, so good. You get rid of some clutter, the environment is helped and you get a slice of delicious pizza- but the impact of this marketing campaign goes much further.

Pizza Pizza are focusing on the environmental impact of the campaign but they are also helping, perhaps inadvertently, to stop the supply of counterfeit components:

Counterfeits come from consumer electronics being dumped in landfill sites and then smuggled to China. Goods are broken apart to get to the components which are then heated to remove the solder and free the parts. The components are then washed, often in rivers or using collected rainwater then treated in a process known as 'blacktopping' to make them look genuine. They are then sold back into the supply chain.

We all know how bad counterfeit parts are for our industry. They are dangerous and even life threatening. By ensuring electronic goods are recycled rather than dumped in landfill, Pizza Pizza are thwarting the flow of goods to China, helping to stop counterfeits and giving the environment a helping hand.

Great start to 2015 for semiconductor industry

Global semiconductor sales are increasingly positive with overall sales totaling $28.5 billion! This is an increase of 8.7% from January 2014 which is great news indeed! The totals for January 2015 is the industry's highest ever January total. Doing particularly well are the Americas which have increased by 16.4% compared to this time last year.

The figures come from the Semiconductor Industry Association and their CEO John Neuffer was very pleased with the results: "After a record-setting 2014, the global semiconductor industry is off to a promising start to 2015, posting its highest-ever January sales led by impressive growth in the Americas market."
